No matter what age you are, you want to look your youngest and your best.Healthy skin looks smooth and clear. We know that we should be using good, pH balanced products to maintain the outward appearance of our skin. When we look at our internal health, and how we can make ourselves look and feel better from the inside, we hear these terms, “Antioxidants” and “Free Radicals” throughout websites and literature. What are they though, and how do these affect our skin and our health?
Let’s start with the free radicals. Basically, our body generates hundreds of waste products. Some of these are most commonly known as our bathroom excretions, or the carbon dioxide that is created when we exhale. Generally, the biggest creator of free radicals is oxygen! This is called “oxidative stress” where the unstable oxygen molecule searches for an electron. However, our body also makes these toxic compounds when we convert our food to energy, and we also eat them in organic matter (plants and animals) or breath them in from pollution.
Free radicals are a molecule that is missing an electron. So, these toxins scavenge looking for an electron to fill the “hole” that they are missing. They are not very discerning, and will even steal them from the cells in your body. When body cells lose an electron, they are damaged, and this can cause disease, advanced aging and skin conditions.
If we want to stay healthy, we need to protect ourselves from electron thievery. As free radicals are not something that can be destroyed, it’s easier to just give them a free electron. This is where our friends, the antioxidants come into play. Antioxidants can engage with the free radicals and “donate” an electron before the free radicals can steal one from the body. However, once the electron is donated, the antioxidant now becomes a free radical and the cycle continues. So, you must constant replenish their supply.
The body doesn’t manufacture antioxidants, so they must be consumed in our diet. The most common antioxidants are Vitamin E, Beta-Carotene, Vitamin C, and Selenium (which you must take care that you don’t overdose on). Some foods that contain these nutrients are:
