Magazines can make the “morning after” look positively sexy. From the smoky, smudged mascara to the perfectly tousled hair, it’s no wonder that washing the make-up from your face is a total drag. It seems so easy; water, cleanser, and off to watch a little bit of Netflix on your phone before you fall asleep…Right? Well not so easy. Tugging at your face and washing it improperly is just as bad as leaving it on before you go to sleep! Here is an easy to remember “beauty cleanse” for your nightly ablutions.
You put your make-up on stages, so you must remove it in stages. Start with removing your eye make-up as this takes a lot of care. Use an oil-based eye make-up remover. If you’ve really gone glam with the mascara, apply a few drops to a cotton pad and just leave them on your eyelids for a minute or so. This is a great time to practice your sleepy-time meditation.
Once you’ve softened the mascara, you should be able to softly wipe it off your eyelashes without tugging. Gently remove the rest of your eye make-up gently swiping from the inner-corner out. Don’t forget those brows, especially if you have used brow creams or waxes.
Use a clean pad with a few drops of makeup remover on the rest of your face. Gently work from the nose outward and use a light touch. Remember if you are using a heavy sunblock or a silicone based primer, you will have to use a few pads. Don’t forget your neck, as many do, and you want to take of your neck skin! Use them until they come away clean. Do not scrub, just gently wipe.
Cleansing and toning should be part of your skin routine and it’s a great habit to get into. Using the appropriate cleanser for you skin, put some on your finger tips and lightly rub the cleanser up from the corner of your nose, up and around your forehead on either side, down your cheeks, on your chin and finish at the corners of your mouth. It’s like drawing little circular butterfly wings along your face. This gentle action will wash your skin without rubbing. Rinse with lukewarm water and then gently blot your face dry. Try using soft towels just for your face and wash them every other day or two as you don’t want oils to build up on the towel.
After that, you are ready to finish with whatever treatments you are using on your skin! This is the best time as your pores are open and ready to receive. Use your skin creams or oils, and pat gently to apply. Eye creams or gels should be gently patted in using your ring fingers. Let dry before you rub your face into your pillow. Speaking of pillows, you should be changing the cases every few days to make sure that dirt and grease aren’t being rubbed back onto your face.
This regimen is also great for doing before you head to that sweaty gym session. Exercising while wearing full makeup is bad, as you’ll be pushing make-up, sweat and grime into your pores every time you swab sweat off your face. You can apply your treatments after another quick cleanse afterwards. Your pores will thank you!
