Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a dry, scaly skin disorder. Doctors believe it is cause by the immune system being mistakenly "triggered", resulting in skin cells being produced too quickly. Normally, the skin cells approximately 21-28 days to replace themselves. However, in people with psoriasis it takes only 2-6 days. Thus resulting in the build-up of dead skin cells, appearing as plaque-like patches of dry skin.

Psoriasis affects approximately 3% of the people worldwide and usually develops between the age of 11 and 45 years. The classic symptoms of psoriasis are raised, red patches of skin topped with loose silvery scales, usually found on the knees and elbows. However, psoriasis does not only occur on the knees and elbows. There are different severities of psoriasis and some may suffer from their whole body being covered, even their nails, scalp and joints can be affected.

Psoriasis is classified by different signs and symptoms as well as the location of the affected area. There are different symptoms for the varying types of psoriasis. They may differ in severity and may appear in a variety of combinations.

It is believe that the causes of psoriasis are as follows:

  • Diet
  • Immune dysfunction
  • Poor gut and bowel function
  • Sluggish liver function
